Pyrography and Acrylics on wood panel
18”x18”
2020

This piece represents the Winter Solstice, the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The winter solstice, also known as Yule, marks the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and symbolizes the ‘dark night’ of the soul and is a time to release the dark in favor of the light—literally and metaphorically—and to welcome back the sun (light) as each new day grows longer. With the absence of light this is also a time to circle within to honor the Shadow Self and give gratitude to our mistakes and allow them to lead us back on the path to the Light.
This piece was inspired by my work on the “Wheel of the Year” and incorporates several of the symbols of the eight festivals of the year. It has a companion piece representing the Summer Solstice titled “Solstice”.
